Disability Insurance, often called DI or Disability Income Insurance, is a form of insurance that insures the beneficiary’s earned income against the risk that a disability creates a barrier for a worker to complete the core functions of their work. For example the inability to focus or maintain composure as with psychological disorders or an injury, illness or condition that causes physical impairment or incapacity to work. It encompasses paid sick leave, short-term disability benefits, and long-term disability benefits. Statistics show that in the US, a disabling accident occurs on average once every second.
These policies are designed to help protect those who need help covering day-to-day living expenses if they are sick or hurt, under the care of a physician, and unable to work. You have the option of choosing a combination of coverages that best meet your needs. Your selection of the options below will help determine the cost of your policy.
- The monthly benefit amount
- The benefit period: the length of time benefits are paid to you or your employees
- The elimination period: the length of time you or your employees must be disabled before benefits begin

If your sickness or injury prevents you from returning to work on a full-time basis, your insurance company will continue to pay part of your monthly benefit amount for up to six months.

If you participate in an approved vocational rehabilitation program while you are totally disabled, your insurance company will pay for part, if not all, of those expenses. The level of support you receive depends on your monthly benefit amount.
